An accurate, unobstructed, view of the uterus

This procedure is used to view your fallopian tubes and uterus and is routinely recommended for women who are having difficulty conceiving. This preliminary test is great for women 20+ looking to better understand their reproductive health and anatomy.

HSG Step-By-Step

1

Step

During the procedure, you will recline on the exam table and place your legs into a pair of stirrups. A speculum (the same type used during a routine gynecological exam) is used to open the vaginal canal.
2

Step

A thin tube, called a cannula, is inserted through the vagina and into the cervix (the opening of the uterine cavity). Liquid contrast dye is pushed through the cannula to fill the uterine cavity. If there are no blockages, the fallopian tubes will also fill with liquid.
3

Step

When the uterus and tubes are filled, an x-ray imaging device called a fluoroscope is positioned over the pelvis. A series of images are taken. The exam should last between 5 and 15 minutes. Your results will be ready within a few days.
